OUTFLOW 2020

Oil slicks on roads after rain. A small, everyday event, the optical phenomenon of oil, water and light.

Waste oil drips out of car engines onto our roads. After the rain it floats on top of puddles. Each colour of light has a different wavelength and the oil slick has varying depth, thus producing a spectrum of colours.

The grey fissures signify our broken world, the luscious oil, consumerism, the rainbow, hope.

We know the extraction of oil, its use and resulting residue are fuelling climate change, poisoning land and sea. Our love of fossil fuels is a crime - unkindness to the world’s poor, indifference to our planet.

Yet our small everyday actions can be an outflow of mercy.
